Glasgow's first traditional German market brought some early Christmas cheer to the city today when it opened in St Enoch Square. by Lorna Ceitens

Around 40 chalets decorated with fairy lights and tinsel are selling traditional hand-made goods including candles, wooden toys and cuckoo clocks.
The event - which aims to recreate the atmosphere of German markets in cities such as Stuttgart, Dusseldorf and Nuremberg - will also feature carol singing and other festive entertainment. The market is being run by Cologne-based family firm Xmas Markets and will operate until December 23.

Marc Lovegrove, of Xmas Markets, said: "We are really happy about the feedback we have had so far. Everyone is very happy to have us here. Glasgow is a lovely place and people are really interested in what we're offering." The company has another market in Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire, and has been working in partnership with the city council and the St Enoch Centre to bring the event to Glasgow.

It will be the biggest German market to hit Scotland in the run-up to Christmas, and city centre manager Robert Dawson is confident it will bring something extra to Glasgow. He said: "The German market should attract a lot of people to the city centre. It is something different and will brighten the place up and hopefully be very successful."

The Glasgow version, which is being brought to the city by Cologne-based family firm Xmas Markets, will operate from November 26 to December 23.
